ELL-Focused Leadership Institutes
- For districts in which educational leaders (e.g., superintendent, directors of curriculum and instruction, assessment and accountability, special education, principals, counselors, coaches, teacher leaders) have English language learners (ELLs) in their schools and classes, yet do not have training in ELL education.
- These one or two-day interactive institutes are designed to equip educational leaders and leadership team members with the knowledge and skills they need to ensure that their programs for ELLs are effective. Team members are asked to bring student performance data (academic achievement, English language proficiency) to the institute, and we use that evidence to inform our work.
- The workshop targets site-based teams that may include the superintendent or assistant superintendent, central administrators from curriculum and instruction, assessment, special education, ESL/bilingual education, and school-based administrators, coaches, counselors, teacher leaders. The exact configuration of the site-based teams depends on the specific goals of the professional development, which is determined through the needs assessment process.
- The workshop is organized to address participants’ questions and concerns in three fundamental areas: 1) how children learn a second language at school, 2) authentic accountability for ELLs, and 3) critical features of effective programs for ELLs. Equipped with this understanding, participants look critically at their school’s support systems for ELLs (e.g., policies, programs, practices, professional development opportunities), and they develop concrete action steps that they can take to ensure that all students, particularly ELLs, including those with disabilities, can and do achieve.
