Ensuring Shared Responsibility for ELLs

  • For districts or schools in which ELLs spend the majority of their time in mainstream classes with teachers who are not trained in ELL education, and who don't know how to address the needs of those students.
  • These one or two-day interactive workshops help mainstream teachers and administrators develop the knowledge and skills they need to educate the ELLs in their classes and schools. We emphasize the need for all educators who work with ELLs to develop a common language and a common practice schoolwide that ties improved instruction for ELLs to performance gains by ELLs. We also clarify the role of ESL/bilingual teachers relative to mainstream teachers, and highlight strategies that improve teacher collaboration.
  • This workshop targets mainstream teachers and ESL/bilingual teachers who have ELLs in their classes, and the coaches and administrators who structure and mentor their work.
  • The workshop introduces participants to critical features of effective programs for ELLs, with attention to standards-driven sheltered content-area instruction for ELLs, standards-driven content-based English as a second language instruction, reading and writing across the curriculum, and differentiated instruction for ELLs. The workshop is organized to model the kinds of strategies that educators can use in their classes.
